Class Captain’s Report for 2017
Social The early part of the year
was punctuated with three class lunches at the club, all with reasonable
numbers attending and enabling some non-sailing past class members to join us
and keep in touch.
Sailing 12 boats have launched and raced this year, with
nine competing in the spring series, 10 in the summer and 12 in the autumn
series. This compares well with St Mawes who also had 12 boats for their Thursday evening
racing and Falmouth Week. Polly Oliver
won in the spring, Guillemot in the summer and Polly Oliver again in the
autumn. Telamon
won the short sharp series and Guillemot the regatta.
In the club points series, there
were six different boats winning races, with a seventh winning the short sharp
series, and an average turnout of six.
Grog was the most popular buoy used in the courses set by my many able
racing assistants.
Championship It was disappointing
that no boats travelled from Falmouth for the championships. It was a close contest between Polly Oliver
and Thunderer with Polly Oliver winning for the first
time since 1970. The costs of the
Championships are becoming prohibitive for the numbers entering – this year
they cost £800 for just nine entries resulting in an additional charge on top
of the £60 entry fee. We therefore need
to consider whether racing in Dovercourt Bay is an
affordable option for the 2018 East Coast Championship.
Boats for Sale and New Members There
remain a number of boats for sale, with three advertised on the Club’s
website. There has been some interest
from potential new members to the club but to date none of the interest has
developed further.
